October 05, 2017 03:18 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams officially open the 2017-18 regular season when the Mountaineers host the West Virginia State Games, on Oct. 6-7, at the WVU Natatorium.
Competition on Friday begins at 4 p.m. ET with diving events, while swimming is set to start at 6 p.m. Saturday's events, which are split into two sessions, begin at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
"WVU swimming and diving is looking forward to hosting the West Virginia State Games," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "It's a great way for each program to start the season and represent the state of West Virginia as well."
The event features a competition between collegiate swimming and diving programs from across the Mountain State. This weekend marks the fourth time WVU has hosted the State Games in its seven-year history (2017, '15, '13, '11). Marshall has played host for the other three competitions (2016, '14, '12).
This year, seven teams – Davis & Elkins, Fairmont State, Marshall, Salem International, West Virginia Institute of Technology, West Virginia Wesleyan and WVU – are participating in the two-day event.
The Mountaineer men have won the State Games six times, including last season, while the women's team has been victorious five times, most recently in 2015. Last year, the men's team won 19 of 20 events, cruising to a win with a total of 1,696.50 points. The women's team garnered 986 points en route to a second-place finish.
WVU held its annual Gold-Blue Meet last weekend at the WVU Natatorium. For the first time in three years, the Blue team defeated Gold by a score of 164-143.
"The teams had a very strong start to our season in training and practices," Riggs said. "I know the teams are excited to start their season and race. It's a lot of swims in three sessions, so we will need to stay focused on the race plans, but more importantly, our recovery between events to finish the meet as strong as we start it."
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, WVU swimmers will wear pink caps this weekend and throughout the month of October. Additionally, representatives from the WVU Medicine Cancer Institute will be collecting donations for its pink shirts benefiting its breast cancer program during the Oct. 27-28 meet at the WVU Natatorium.
