MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University gymnastics team set out for a cool, fall walk on Sept. 30….but this was no ordinary team activity.
The Mountaineers participated in the 2017 Walk For Wishes, a nationwide Make-A-Wish fundraiser that celebrates the wishes already granted and raises funds for future wishes.
The squad gathered at the Hazel Ruby McQuain Amphitheater on Saturday morning for the 5k walk. While the Mountaineers put in the steps at the event, the hard work was completed in the weeks leading up to the walk, as the team raised $1,105 for the cause, the seventh-best showing for a participating fundraising team.
"I'm really proud of the time and effort the team put into the Walk For Wishes," first-year Mountaineer assistant coach Shea Anderson said. "Not only did we participate in the walk as a team, but we raised more than $1,000, and those funds will go a long way in helping grant wishes for kids in our community."
The Mountaineers' efforts were part of the more than $33,054 this year's walk raised, surpassing the initial goal of $30,000.
