
Papineau Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - After leading the Mountaineers to a second-place finish at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational, sophomore Etienne Papineau of the WVU golf team has been named the West Virginia Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
The St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada, native used a career-low score of 69 in the first round to set the tone for the weekend.
Papineau shot a career-low 54-hole total of 211 at the tournament and tied for second overall. It also marked a career-best -5 versus par. His final score also marked the best by a WVU player in the history of the invitational.

We had a lot of the ball and a lot of good possession. We had two unbelievable chances there and just missed the frame and missed chances to score. I thought our approach was right, we put them under a lot of pressure and really limited them to set pieces and throw-ins. I thought we were in control of the game and just didn't take our chances very well tonight. It's a point on the road in a tough conference game, and we'll look to move forward, have a good week of training and get ready for one of the top teams in the country in Western Michigan at home at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Friday."

Goetz defeated Amos in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, and 6-3 ... Goetz would go on to fall to No. 1-seeded Nina Sorkin, 6-4 and 6-1, in the second round of qualifiers ... the duo of Goetz and Choo also played in the doubles main draw on Friday ... the pair rallied from a slow start, but ultimately fell 8-4 (4) to Liberty's Rebekah Anderson and Ashley Bongart ... on Saturday, Lyn Yuen Choo began play in the singles main draw ... she dropped Emma Petersen of James Madison, 7-6 (4) and 6-2, to advance to Sunday's second round ... This Week in Rifle: The No. 2 Mountaineers return to Morgantown to play host to Great America Rifle Conference foe No. 9 Mississippi on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 8 a.m., at the WVU Rifle Range.
Last Week in Rifle: WVU (3-0, 2-0 GARC) continued its season-opening win streak with a 4716-4653 victory at Nebraska on Oct. 14 … the Mountaineers swept the discipline competitions, winning smallbore, 2336-2304, and air rifle, 2380-2349 … sophomore Milica Babic earned her second straight air rifle victory with a 597 mark, while redshirt freshman David Koenders took the smallbore win with a career-high 588.

This Week in Golf: West Virginia heads to Windermere, Florida, to co-host the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational at Isleworth Golf and Country Club on Oct. 22-24 … the Mountaineers are joined by Central Florida in hosting this year's event … Arizona, Cal, Illinois, Arizona State, Augusta State, Texas Tech, Florida, North Texas, Vanderbilt, Purdue, North Carolina, North Florida, UAB, LSU and Auburn are among the other participants in the tournament.
Last Week in Golf: The Mountaineers hosted their annual tournament, The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational, on Monday and Tuesday at Pete Dye Country Club … WVU finished second at the event, marking its best finish in the three-year history of the tournament … Bowling Green was the team champion at even par with an 864 … WVU shot two over at 866, while Rutgers was four over par at 868.

Notes: The WVU men's and women's teams opened the 2017-18 regular season by earning first-place finishes at the West Virginia State Games on Oct. 6-7 … the men's team finished with 1,899 points, while the women earned 1,515.5 points … redshirt senior Nate Carr won eight events during the two-day meet, claiming WVU Natatorium records … Carr won the 200 individual medley in record time (1:48.97) and was a part of a record-setting 800 freestyle relay team (6:44.75) along with junior Drew Damich and sophomores Ryan Kelly and Trayton Saladin … sophomore Morgan Bullock led the WVU women with seven victories, three of them in individual events … the Mountaineer men have won the West Virginia State Games for seven consecutive years, while the women's team won the meet six times in seven years.
This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers will compete in their second fall race of the season on Saturday, Oct. 21, as they take on Robert Morris in Morgantown ... all racing will take place at the Monongahela River.

Notes: WVU began the fall season with races against Duquesne and Dayton on Saturday, Oct. 7, in Morgantown ... the three teams competed in two trial rounds, taking a short break in between rounds ... the first round of racing consisted of each teams' varsity eight boats ... the teams competed in four paced races, beginning at a 16-rate and increasing to a pace of 24 strokes per minute in four separate races ... after a short break, the Mountaineers, Dukes and Flyers competed in the same style pieces with the varsity four boats ... the three teams each used three separate boats in the 'A', 'B' and 'C' races.
This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers host the Martha Thorn Invitational on Oct. 20-22 … WVU will face James Madison, Marshall and Miami (Ohio) in the three-day tournament … every team will play two singles and two doubles matches each day … weather permitting, the Martha Thorn Invite will take place on the WVU Tennis Courts, located at the WVU Coliseum complex.
Last Week in Tennis: Two Mountaineers, junior Paula Goetz and senior Lyn Yuen Choo, competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional Championships from Oct. 13-16 ... the Atlantic regionals were held in Blacksburg, Virginia, on the campus of Virginia Tech ... on Friday, Goetz opened the regionals in the singles qualifiers, with a match against Abby Amos of James Madison ... Goetz defeated Amos in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, and 6-3 ... Goetz would go on to fall to No. 1-seeded Nina Sorkin, 6-4 and 6-1, in the second round of qualifiers ... the duo of Goetz and Choo also played in the doubles main draw on Friday ... the pair rallied from a slow start, but ultimately fell 8-4 (4) to Liberty's Rebekah Anderson and Ashley Bongart ... on Saturday, Lyn Yuen Choo began play in the singles main draw ... she dropped Emma Petersen of James Madison, 7-6 (4) and 6-2, to advance to Sunday's second round ... Choo would finish the tournament on Sunday, as she pulled off the upset over No. 14-seeded Ines Milosevic of Penn State in two sets, 6-0 and 6-3 ... in the third round, Choo fell to No. 6 Eva Alexandrova in two sets, 7-5 and 6-3 to end the tournament.
Notes: The 2017 Martha Thorn Invitational marks the third time WVU has hosted the tournament under Miha Lisac ... with two singles victories over the weekend, Choo now leads the Mountaineers with four victories in the fall ... Choo, Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau lead the Mountaineers with three doubles wins each.

Last Week in Baseball: West Virginia concluded its fall season with a 7-2 loss to Bucknell on Sunday afternoon … West Virginia scored two runs on three hits with two errors, while Bucknell scored seven runs on five hits with no errors … the Mountaineers' two runs came in the first inning, while the Bison were held hitless through five innings before scoring four runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the ninth … WVU's two-run first inning began with two outs, when junior Darius Hill doubled home freshman Tyler Doanes and sophomore Isaiah Kearns followed with a run-scoring triple … junior right-hander Christian Young got the start on the mound and pitched 2.0 perfect innings, striking out two … freshman lefty Jackson Wolf followed with 3.0 hitless innings, striking out four, walking just one and facing the minimum in his three innings of work.
