MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University head women’s soccer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown announced today the signing of four student-athletes for the 2006 season.
The four student-athletes who have committed to play for the Mountaineers in 2006 are as follows: Miko Alley (Prichard, W.Va.), Carolyn Blank (Toms River, N.J.), Rachel Dahlstrand (Erie, Pa.) and Nicole Mailloux (Mississauga, Ontario).
Alley is a four-year varsity starter at Huntington High where she served as a captain her senior season. She twice earned first team all-state honors (2002, 2005) while leading her high school squad to two state championships. A forward/midfielder, Alley recently started all four matches of the 2005 Southeast Asia games for the Phillippines National team. She plays club soccer for WV United and has helped her team, Vision, to four state championships. Alley also plays in the Super Y league for the Charlotte Soccer Club and was a Gatorade player of the year nominee.
“Miko will add to our solid team chemistry,” says head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “She brings great national team experience and a lot of pride to be representing the state of West Virginia.”
Blank, who has been tabbed one of the Top 50 recruits in the country by SoccerBuzz, is a three-time national team pool player and a former member of the U-16 national team. The Toms River, N.J., native is a three-time high school All-American who plays club soccer for the PDA Wildcats, the 2003 national champions. A midfielder, she has been a state and regional ODP team member since 2001 and is the all-time leading scorer and four-time MVP at Toms River High. Blank is also a four-time all-state, all-county and all-conference honoree.
“Carolyn is such a versatile player,” comments Izzo-Bown. “With her tremendous club and national team experience, she’ll be a great addition to our team.”
Dahlstrand, the all-time leading scorer at McDowell High, is a four-year starter at forward/midfield. A captain her senior season, Dahlstrand earned first-team all-state and PA region 3 player of the year recognition. Dahlstrand plays club soccer for Lake Erie and the Erie Admirals.
“Rachel’s speed and size will be exciting to watch,” says Izzo-Brown. “They will give her a great asset to help impact our program.”
Izzo-Brown’s fourth Canadian in two years, Mailloux comes to West Virginia with solid experience playing on provincial, regional and national Canadian squads. A defender, she is a member of the U-17 and U-18 Canadian national team. Mailloux played club soccer for Dixie 88S, the three-time provincial champions who won the Canadian national championship in 2004. She is the 2004 city of Mississauga’s high school athlete of the year.
“Nikki’s mentality and physical presence as a defender are two main qualities I look for in a defender,” adds Izzo-Brown. “Her experience is solid and she will be a good addition to our program.
“I am excited for this year’s class because of the great soccer experiences they possess,” Izzo-Brown says of the class as a whole. “They are very eager to help us continue to build upon the success of this program.”
